Vijay Singh

Vijay Singh, CF (Hindi: विजय सिंह, IPA: [ˈʋɪdʒəj sɪ̃ɦ]; born 22 February 1963), nicknamed "The Big Fijian", is a Fijian professional golfer who was Number 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking for 32 weeks in 2004 and 2005. He has won three major championships (The Masters in 2000 and the PGA Championship in 1998 and 2004) and was the leading PGA Tour money winner in 2003, 2004 and 2008. He was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2005 (but deferred his induction until 2006). He won the FedEx Cup in 2008.

An Indo-Fijian following Hindu religion, Singh was born in Lautoka, Fiji and grew up in Nadi. A resident of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, he is known for his meticulous preparation, often staying at the range hours before and after his tournament rounds, working on his game.

Early life and amateur career

Singh recollected to reporters about his childhood: "When we were kids we couldn't afford golf balls so we had to make do with coconuts. My father used to say, 'Little Vijay, golf balls don't fall off trees you know,' so I found some that did!" Growing up, he played snooker, cricket, football, and the island's most popular sport, rugby. He is the son of Mohan Singh, an airplane technician who also taught golf. Growing up, he admired the swing of Tom Weiskopf, using it as an early model for his own.

Vijay Singh (politician)

Vijay Singh is a former Fijian politician of Indian descent, who represented the Vuda Open Constituency in the House of Representatives for the Fiji Labour Party (FLP) from 2001 to 2006, having retained the seat at the 2001 parliamentary election with more than 57 percent of the votes cast.

In 2003, Singh was offered the portfolio of Minister for Fair Trading & Consumer Affairs, together with 13 other FLP parliamentarians who were offered cabinet positions by the Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase but the FLP refused to accept this offer.

The parliamentary election held on 6–13 May 2006 was marked by intrigue. The FLP replaced Singh as its candidate with then-Senator Felix Anthony, on what Singh claims was an undertaking that he would be given Anthony's seat in the Senate. This did not eventuate, and Singh pursued legal action against the FLP leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, for reneging on the promise that he was alleged to have made. Chaudhry, for his part, denied having given any such promise.

Vijay Singh (administrator)

Vijay Singh (born July 13, 1948) is a former officer from the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), 1970 batch, Madhya Pradesh Cadre. He was appointed Defense Secretary, in the Ministry of Defence, in August 2007. He succeeded Shekhar Dutt, IAS, of 1969 batch, who, on superannuation, was appointed as Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic and Defence related subjects in the National Security Council Secretariat, with rank and pay of Secretary to the Government of India, for a term of 2 years.
